Ghana is one of the best destinations to engage with locals in a meaningful way. Ghanaians are a proud and intensely friendly people, always eager to show you around, get to know you, and introduce you to their rich culture. Nowhere is this more apparent than during a trip to Torgorme Village, located on the Lower Volta River.
A mere 1.5 hrs outside of Accra by road, the village and its traditional way of life provides a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the capital. The journey begins with a drive through the Shai Hills Reserve, where road-side baboons turn a standard bus transfer into an exciting wildlife-viewing experience. Upon arrival to the village, you will be greeted by packs of smiling children, many of whom are eager to give you a hug and take selfies. With the youngsters leading the way, you will pay your respects to the village elders before having the honor of participating in a naming ceremony and watching a traditional dance demonstration. Don’t be shy when you’re asked to join the dance party! You will also have the opportunity walk around the village and try your hand at pottery making or kente cloth weaving.
Overall, a visit to Torgorme is a fun, interactive, and engaging cultural excursion that appeals to many travel groups, regardless of their program theme. The excursion can easily be done as a half-day trip, or if you’re interested in a more immersive experience, you can even do an overnight homestay. No matter how much time you spend in Torgorme though, you’re sure to remember it for many years to come.
